![]() It’s serviceable as an excuse to send you all across the overworld, clearing out dungeons and collecting shards of a magical gem as you go. It’s up to you, a pale-bodied amnesiac named Nobody armed with Nostramagus’ magic wand, to – as the title would suggest – save the world. Nobody Saves the World’s straightforward story opens with the onset of a disastrous calamity: everything has inexplicably been covered in gross fungus, monsters are everywhere, and the world’s most powerful wizard, Nostramagus, has gone missing. After a slow start it’s good fun for a long stretch before the campaign loses steam once the chase of unlocking all the forms starts to come to an end. It’s a clever premise that’s bolstered by fantastic playstyle customization options and all the charm and humor I’ve come to expect from the developers of Guacamelee. The latest from Drinkbox Studios is a fun but uneven top-down action-RPG that has you somewhat clumsily swapping between 15 different unlockable forms, mixing and matching their abilities to overcome challenging dungeons. It may be a little early in the year to throw out loaded terms like "game of the year nominee," but it's certainly reasonable to declare that Nobody Saves the World deserves a spot on everybody's list of must-play Xbox Game Pass games. How much I enjoyed Nobody Saves the World was constantly in flux as I played, which is somewhat appropriate given the transforming nature of its hero. Its the perfect kind of game to just lose yourself in and explore at your own pace and on your own terms. Sometimes you just need a game that lets you run amok as a mermaid and hit baddies with your tail or swim around and spray water as a turtle. ![]() You don't even have to do it alone, as online coop lets you bring a friend along for the wild ride. The world that has been created for the player is vibrant, colorful, and adorably weird in a way that just lures you in and makes you forget that you've been hunting mana fairies in crevices as a turtle for four hours. The title is the most ambitious to date from Drinkbox Studios, and is considerably larger than their previous game yet it is overwhelmingly polished. Nobody Saves the World is the type of game that just oozes quality and charm. Nobody Saves the World: Should you play it? It's a personal preference, but I would like the option to fast travel dynamically from wherever I'm located without making it to a specific point first. However, there were plenty of times that I attempted to fast travel from the map without first traveling to a fast travel point. The world in this game is impressive in its size and variety, and the fast travel is a life saver when you're moving across the map for various dungeons. Nobody Saves the World's map and fast travel system could use some minor quality of life tweaks, as well. Rather than having the grunt sound repeatedly with every use of the bench press, it could be dialed back to only trigger every fourth or fifth button press instead. While the "thwack" sound used for the Ranger's bow and arrows feels reasonable to hear upon repeated spamming of the fire button, the Bodybuilder's grunting soundbite when using the bench press ability can wear thin on your nerves after a few minutes. It is no small feat that Nobody Saves the World has as many different characters available to play as it does, each with their own sound profiles. Nobody Saves the World: What you won't like To keep this from feeling repetitive, enemy levels increase along with the players' progress, and the dungeon's floorplan changes each time you traverse your way through it. ![]() Naturally, with so many characters and ability-specific quests, players will inevitably have to revisit previously beaten dungeons to continue their progression. Should you need a reminder of what the requirements of a quest are, you can simply hold LB to expand the pins and see an explainer of what you should be doing.Īs quests are completed and XP grows, so does the player's level. While it could seem overwhelming to have so many different forms and options, the quest system does a fantastic job of keeping it all streamlined and easy to follow.Īctive quests for your current form are pinned at the top of the ever-growing quest list, and a progress bar is always visible as part of the hud on the left-hand side of the screen. Completing these form-specific quests typically involve taking out a certain amount of baddies using that specific form and ability.
